Turmeric: Better At Killing Cancer Than Chemotherapy

Turmeric, has proven to be better at killing cancer stem cells (CSC) than chemotherapy or radiation

A recently published study in the journal Anticancer Research, states that curcumin, a compound found in turmeric, kills cancer stem cells. It selectively and safely kills cancer stem cells while leaving healthy cells intact. In some cases, it is actually able to work alongside conventional chemotherapy, giving the conventional treatment more effectiveness and lessening the harmful side effects. However, cancer stem cells (CSC) are at the root of all cancer malignancies and have proven tough to eradicate by using the conventional model of surgery, chemo, and radiation.

Despite the fact that curcumin has been extensively researched for decades and has demonstrated clear anti-cancer power in clinical trials, it is still not widely prescribed in cancer therapy as there is little financial incentive to do so. Drug companies cannot patent natural substances, and without a patent there is no profit. The good news is that you are still able to receive many of the benefits of curcumin by using the spice turmeric liberally in your cooking and/or through supplements.

The study, titled, “Curcumin and Cancer Stem Cells: Curcumin Has Asymmetrical Effects on Cancer and Normal Stem Cells,” describes the wide range of mechanisms presently identified by which curcumin attacks CSC. [1]

“Abstract. Curcumin has been shown to have numerous
cytotoxic effects on cancer stem cells (CSC). This is due to
its suppression of the release of cytokines, particularly
interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8 and IL-1, which stimulate CSC, and
also to its effects at multiple sites along CSC pathways, such
as Wnt, Notch, Hedgehog and FAK. In spite of its multiple
actions targeting CSC, curcumin has little toxicity against
normal stem cells (NSC). This may be due to curcumin’s
different effects on CSC and NSC.” [1]

It also states that the efficacy of standard treatments are limited and often the cancer recurs. However, tumors depleted of stem cells cannot grow.

“Further, an unintended consequence of induced cancer cell death is the
release of inflammatory cytokines, which can stimulate
replication of CSC (12-14). The percentage of CSC in the
cancer has been shown to increase in patients receiving
neoadjuvant chemotherapy (9, 15, 16). Thus, an “equilibrium”
may be formed where chemotherapy-induced tumor cell death
results in increased stimulation of tumor growth (12). In
addition, the cytokines secreted during induced cancer cell
death can result in resistance to cytotoxic agents, so that
metastases, when they occur, may be refractory to therapy (14,
17, 18). This suggests, for therapy to be effective on a
consistent basis, it must eliminate both CSC and non-stem
cell cancer cells.” [1]

It appears that CSC are resistant to chemotherapy, radiation and that the latter possibly cause the tumor to grow.

CSC are widely believed to be responsible for tumor recurrence and the failure of conventional treatment. Therefore this study adds growing support to the idea that natural substances like turmeric are far superior to chemotherapy and radiation. Given the evidence that a safe and effective alternative may already exist, chemotherapy, radiation and even surgery may no longer be justified.

In fact, a significant body of evidence now implicates these treatments in worsening prognosis, and in some cases causing cancer stem cell enrichment in tumors. [2]

Radiotherapy, for instance, has been found to induce cancer stem cell like properties in breast cancer cells, essentially increasing their malignancy by 30 times. [3]

This is hardly progress when one considers the role that CSC play, especially in contributing to post-treatment secondary cancers.

Not only is turmeric one of the most impressive free radical scavengers, it’s also been shown

to support brain health, protect cell integrity, and even encourage a balanced mood.

Curcumin, a natural component that is isolated from the rhizome of Curcuma longa plants, has attracted great interest among many scientists studying solid cancers over the last half century. Interestingly, curcumin provides an ideal alternative to current therapies because of its relatively safe profile, even at high doses. To date, curcumin’s potent antifungal activity against different strains of Candida, Cryptococcus, Aspergillus, Trichosporon and Paracoccidioides have been reported, indicating that curcumin anticancer drugs may also possess an antifungal role, helping cancer patients to resist invasive fungal infection related complications. The aim of this review is to discuss curcumin’s dual pharmacological activities regarding its applications as a natural anticancer and antifungal agent. These dual pharmacological activities are expected to lead to clinical trials and to improve infection survival among cancer patients. “Curcumin and its promise as an anticancer drug: An analysis of its anticancer and antifungal effects in cancer and associated complications from invasive fungal infections,”

From the pharmaceutical standpoint, natural substances cannot be patented

This precludes turmeric or any of its extracts from ever receiving FDA approval for the prevention or treatment of disease, even though it is capable of doing exactly this. Clearly natural substances are superior to synthetic ones and embody a synthesis between plant and animal.

Here’s a quick rundown of turmeric’s other health benefits:

  • Aids in metabolism and weight management
  • Natural pain reliever
  • Helps detoxify the liver
  • Natural antiseptic & antibacterial agent
  • Cleanses the blood & promotes healthy skin
  • Promotes good digestion & healthy gut bacteria
  • Supports healthy blood glucose levels
  • Anti-cancerous
  • Used in Chinese Medicine as a treatment for depression
  • Supports brain health
  • Is a free radical scavenger
  • Protects cell integrity

Get all the wonderful health benefits of turmeric, in particular its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, by incorporating it into a delicious and easy to make smoothie.

Recipe for a turmeric smoothie:

TurmericThe Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 ripe avocado
  • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen berries any
  • 1/2 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 tablespoon honey (substitute maple syrup or stevia)

Feel free to add any other ingredients of your choice. Put all the ingredients into a blender and blend until nice and smooth.

Another way to help acute internal inflammation is to put 1 teaspoon turmeric, 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper and 2 teaspoons of honey into a glass. Add hot water and stir until the honey has melted. Sip slowly as the mixture is hot, but it will sort out any digestive problems and most pains that are caused by inflammation. Please do not use if you are on medications from your MD, find out first if this is safe.

Alternatively, if you don’t like the taste of turmeric then capsules are probably the best way forward.
