May 2016 Horoscope by Alex

Hello folks! Here is your May 2016 horoscope

Apologies for the slight delay in publishing. Mercury retrograde gremlins have given both site difficulties and personal obstacles to overcome. In fact, it is not only Mercury, but also Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and Pluto that are retrograde. This month is power-packed and the story arcs are rich and layered. When we speak of retrogrades, really it is an optical illusion of planetary movements. A bit like when a faster vehicle overtakes yours, it can seem like you are moving backwards (relative to the faster object that approached, then passed you). Each planet’s characteristics are brought out under the retrograde, as those characteristics bear upon the human picture.

Interestingly, this time (it happens three or four times per year) Mercury’s retrograde is aligned in three dimensions – which means it will pass directly over the disk of the Sun, relative to the Earth. We call this an occultation (which is effectively an ‘eclipse’ but with Mercury involved instead of the moon – and too far away to obscure the Sun – instead, it presents as a tiny black circle, crossing the solar disk). This merely gives this Mercury retrograde more tangibility (especially during the occultation); more concrete and measurable impact. Be aware to remain patient over the next three weeks and use any delays productively.

It is due to be a game changer of a month for many of you. The more preparation you have done, the easier the transitions will be – which is basically to say that astrology, at its best, is a tool you can use to work with greater awareness of your situation. When you work in that way, it is always much easier to progress and make forward strides in your life. The goal is to be rooted in your most authentic self. It IS possible and this month, I wish you great forward bounds in arriving there!

Aries May 2016 horoscope by AlexARIES: Ideals, theories, principles and values; HOW are these all connected in practice? To answer that question would require some effort in unpacking the relationships between those ideas. More importantly, it would require an understanding of which take precedence and why, becoming the effective drivers of your life. All those concepts can blend into one another and become virtually indistinguishable! It feels a little like you may be experiencing apathy around your sense of how the world is. This may be manifesting as a “can’t be bothered” listlessness. Disillusionment is never pleasant but it can lead into a reconfiguration, based upon placing your faith in a different direction. Before that can happen however, we sometimes have to retrace our steps and even demolish some of the structures we have built upon our assumptions – so that we can re-focus our daily patterns. This is a re-wiring exercise. This month, it would appear that you are having to reconfigure your sense of self around a much more concrete valuing of your bodily and material needs. Maybe you have discovered that you had been acting out old programming; stuff that was never really yours, but that you adopted (perhaps from your mother). So often, we are given roles in childhood that make the parent feel better. Now, you get to put your body on a pedestal. Which feels best?

Taurus May 2016 horoscope by AlexTAURUS: At the end of 2014, you started to build something. You probably had no idea what, at the time. HOW you build was always going to be far more significant than WHAT you build. ‘What’ was a distraction, in all likelihood. Yet one aspect of that involved shaping a more durable base for your life. This can be attributed to Saturn, which recently passed the midpoint of Sagittarius (and is now retrograde) – evoking a picture of Sisyphus and his boulder and… a turning point. Mars has also been in your solar eighth house with Saturn (and is also now retrograde). This speaks clearly of you having been on a kind of autopilot. Yet finally, it is time to shift from the HOW to the WHAT. This is only possible because you are clearer on your needs and wants. A dog scratches feverishly at the earth, barks up into a tree – and this is no longer an image of you. Mercury retrograde in Taurus, now supported by Taurus’s ruler Venus, heralds the decisive switch from being led by the mind to be being led from the body. Not only are the body’s messages more reliable but the outcomes are healthier too! Your mind remains torn but the body knows. And yet, Mars makes clear that your will is still following the mind. Soon, after the paring back, all will align and the green light will appear. Rest assured: The ancient wisdom of the body will NOT fail you.

Gemini May 2016 horoscope by AlexGEMINI: How exactly do you ‘build’ your partnerships? From what set of ideals or principles do you acquire the materials and tools for said building process? Importantly, you are embarking upon a review that will help you get clear on whether the building does/should come from the mind, or from your actual experiences. In philosophy, a distinction is often made between analytic and synthetic propositions. Where does reliable knowledge come from? What senses should we trust? Mercury retrograde in your solar twelfth house, makes very clear that your foundations of self are being somewhat shaken, in the context of how your assumptions/expectations of what is most real are being tested by concrete experiences. When you peel back behind the layers of your mind, you may find yourself in doubtful territory. If all your fixed notions (fabricated by the mind) were to be detonated, what would be left? How would you navigate? WHO exactly would you be? I think your historical experiences of interpersonal relating have likely pushed you into your head for safety and now, my friend, it is time to come out of the cave and allow something outside of your preconceived notions to surprise you – which is one of the greatest indicators of being ALIVE! On such a basis of experience, it is time to reinvent your values around intimate relating.

Cancer May 2016 horoscope by AlexCANCER: We might be inclined to ponder exactly why it is so important to ground our ideals and values. For me, it is so that we can test them. But what exactly are we testing by doing so? Well, on paper, some values and ideals sound splendid. While, in practice, they lead to harm somewhere in the real-world systems we inhabit. What I just outlined could be written in shorthand: ‘acquiring viable wisdom’. Guilt is a killer and you are, among the signs, one of the more (Libra being another) susceptible to its influence. You can get so tied in knots by feeling everything; the uncertainties, the contradictions, the imperfections. Carrying this is both unhealthy and a profound waste of your energy, not to mention your time! When we bring our values into a public arena, we bring about the chance to be affirmed and supported in our choices and actions. You more than most, benefit from strong grounded people, within your significant community. At this time in your life, specific trials encountered, are encouraging you to explore this territory and to get clear on both your values AND the structures of support in your life. If your mission in life, your works of service, are to bear the fruit they rightly should, then you must get clear on just how those closest in, nurture you. Identify these allies then bond deeply with them.

Leo May 2016 horoscope by AlexLEO: When your creative life force meets the constraints and demands of the world for order and structure, how do you see that? How do you FEEL it? I get an image of a piece of clay in a kiln. Are you merely operating the kiln? Or are you the unfired clay in the oven? Or are you instead the end product? Or are you actually the kiln itself? All these metaphors are merely ways of asking “What drives you?” That is up for review now and you know this because you are feeling your transmutation. I guess that makes you the unfired clay, with the kiln recently being lit. As you are changing, so is your sense of self. Moreover, the Sun and Venus, in your solar tenth house, show a firming up of your sense of vocation as an outworking of your own ‘in the kiln’ experiences. Additionally, Mercury retrograde in the same house and edging back toward the Sun and Venus, offers a picture of someone who is completely changing their view of themselves in the context of their vocation. This is a reinvention. I suspect that old blockages had obstructed your path into wholeness for an age. The realisation is coming through akin to the counsel given by the mutant, Kuato, in Total Recall: “A man is defined by his actions, not by his memories” – which was his follow-on from “You are what you DO”. What you see yourself doing IS your career!

Virgo May 2016 horoscope by AlexVIRGO: You are currently in a phase of exploration around your values and their origins – particularly around what constitutes security and stability and why these things have mattered and/or will continue to matter to you. I’m getting the sense that in many respects, your time-honoured values have been meeting a different energy within yourself. It feels as if part of you is just ready to “give up the ghost”. This feels potentially terrifying and liberating at the same time. Overall, I wonder if your sense of curiosity is alive and well? For me, that will prove definitive over the next couple of months. Are your values likely to irrevocably alter, as a result of all this soul searching? I think it more likely you will decide you’ve been investing your values into the wrong people. In order to make changes that can be built upon, you will need to spark your curiosity into a flame. When you think, you expend energy. This can become ruminative and unhealthy, in the long run. My suggestion would be to release any anguish based upon shoulds this month and replace them with a spirit of bold adventure. There is what we are supposed to want and what we actually want and very often the two get confused. Your ruler Mercury, retrograde in your fellow earth sign Taurus, encourages you to reboot in May… with your physical needs central.

Libra May 2016 horoscope by AlexLIBRA: Do you tend to keep a journal, Libra? Well if you don’t, now would be a very good time to get into the habit of documenting your thoughts and ideas – especially over the next couple of months. What might some of the material be that will be coming up during May for documentation? My feeling is that all the solar eighth house activity points to the subject of the depth (and nature) of your primary commitments. What does it mean to be so bounded up with another life that you cannot easily distinguish the parties? How comfortable does ‘inextricable’ feel to you? There can be this strong ambivalence, where we both want and do not want, a specific experience, at exactly the same time. It would be worth your while trying to work out where that ambivalence comes from and what it is really about. This boils down to how you are both the same and not the same, as the people you are truly closest to. What is it in others that you fear? Is it their similarities to you, or their differences? What are you really looking for in your soul-level connections – you, or somebody quite different to you? Until you are very clear with your needs you will not be able to develop clarity on your real wants… and that is what we are looking at here. You are just as capable as anyone else of deep commitment – it’s just that those old templates need updating!

Scorpio May 2016 horoscope by AlexSCORPIO: How identified are you with your physical resources? To answer this question, you are going to have to explore the difference between what is necessary for your life to be healthily supported by material structures and how you feel about any threats/losses to said structures. What happens to you when life or circumstance ensures that your energies are directed away from material prosperity and into other priorities? Well, Scorpio has a self-sufficiency complex going on much of the time. Strong willed and secretive, Scorpio has the trait of ‘no surrender’ – a great quality. And yet, its shadow side involves not letting people in (sometimes pushing them away). The Sun and Venus both indicate that now is the time at which you should explore the balance you have in place between self-reliance and an ability to seek out (and even depend upon) others. Your instant response may be that they simply wouldn’t come through for you – but have you exuded the vibe I described above, for so long, that people just assume and leave you to it? Mercury retrograde in your solar seventh house suggests that in May, you will benefit from a review of how you think about the structures of physical security, as they are related specifically to your most intimate associations. What room do you make for others in your self-reliant world? And I don’t mean superficially!

Sagittarius May 2016 horoscope by AlexSAGITTARIUS: Like a careful detective, stripping back the details of your life mission, you are attempting to identify the golden thread which connects everything! It is exhausting is it not? “Who am I?” “What is this all about?”. Saturn in your sign continues to place you under this relentless pressure to grow. And yet, you want to be led by the cosmic force. If only you could work out its direction, its siren call. You long for a sense of identity/purpose and yet, part of you knows that if you found it, you would lose something else – namely a sense of freedom. This month you explore how your need for freedom drives you and the extent to which freedom is something outside of you, or inside of you. The everyday humdrum can seem to be the single, most relentless, source of deprivation of our freedoms. External constraints of daily living become your great teacher over the coming weeks. You may experience frustrations and delays in these areas, which prove extremely testing to your sense of liberty. It may even feel a little like the time-honoured story involving straws and camels’ backs. But all this offers you something precious. You cannot truly separate the spiritual and the mundane. You cannot have a lofty calling that is pure, minus all the human ‘stuff’. The path lies not outside of you, but within. Make friends with that in May.

Capricorn May 2016 horoscope by AlexCAPRICORN: It is time for an audit on your process of self-change. The most important question, bar none, for you to ask, involves the issue of why you are doing what you are doing. What exactly is the deepest shade of motivation you could possibly excavate? All the significant planets, in the complex of this story, are retrograde. Saturn, your sign-ruler, is retrograde in your solar twelfth house and so is Mars. This tells me that it is time to peel back beneath your unconscious drivers and to try to get (back?) to the core of who you are. No doubt you have developed a complex set of theories to account for how things currently are and why you are driven to do what you do, but these are… largely fairy tales, dressed up as rationalisations. I don’t however, suggest that you spend too much time agonising and looking for a psychological needle in a haystack. I’d only ask yourself to explore honestly which parent you are still attempting to please, by the efforts you put out into the world. Far more important, with Sun, Venus and Mercury retrograde in your solar fifth house, is that you take practical steps first to examine your thinking about the indulgences of pleasure (yours) in this picture of all that you do. (If it isn’t for pleasure what IS it for?) And second, to commit to your own pleasure in all you do, for the foreseeable future!

Aquarius May 2016 horoscope by AlexAQUARIUS: With highly significant retrogrades and planetary activity in your solar eleventh, solar eighth and solar fourth houses, you stand at an interesting juncture of this particular chapter of your life story. The Sun and Venus shine their focus upon your basic conditions of stability in your daily living (such as bricks and mortar). You know this isn’t the 1960’s and you’re unlikely to be taking residence in a hippie commune any time soon, right? Joking apart, such questions are becoming more of a consideration and you are going to have to commit to a definitive structure, fairly soon. Mercury retrograde suggests that there may be commitment fears, based upon past experiences. Moreover, there may be pronounced practicalities to address as you look at what solidifying a specific commitment might mean. What is clear is that we all need broad support structures. If we ‘rely’ upon only one or two, there can be trouble waiting up ahead in more challenging times. And yet, your energies have likely had to be focused in areas that have taken you away from interaction with friends, peers and community. To me, this confluence of influence and circumstance, appears to be opening up some significant questions around the neighbourhood you inhabit. It may well be that you discover by mid-June that you need to relocate, so as to be aligned.

Pisces May 2016 horoscope by AlexPISCES: This month, try on for size the calling of shaman, medicine man or medicine woman. When all around you are in turmoil, you are perhaps feeling more centred than ever you can remember in your life – everything just feels integrated. Sure, your primary relationship (or the concept of relationships generally) may be under serious review at the moment AND your career path may well feel a little less definite, clear or appealing of late than it did even a month ago, but the Sun and Venus suggest that how you connect to the physical world has serious mojo right now. This connection is visceral and direct. It does not require words or theories – it is immediate and intense – akin to the energy of The Magician in tarot. Mercury retrograde suggests that maybe your ideas about the physicality of your world have been rather esoteric in flavour but that from now on, you get in touch with just how your body is a sensory array, taking in and transmitting ‘data’ all the time. In this mission of ‘shaman for a month’, should you choose to accept it, it will be important to engage all five of your senses. Go out into your neighbourhood and observe and listen first of all. Gradually progress to touch, taste and smell. Smell the flowers, touch the trees and the moss and try to locate things you can taste – my personal choice would be wild garlic. Thus you will know your power.
