Stomach ulcers are sores in the gastrointestinal tract which affect billions of people every year, it’s becoming a pandemic. The commonest symptom of an ulcer is a gnawing feeling in the stomach area that lasts from half an hour and up to three hours. The pain usually occurs just below the breastbone but sometimes can be felt in the upper abdomen area. Very often, ulcer pain is misinterpreted as heartburn, indigestion or hunger. Furthermore, loss of appetite and weight are common symptoms, though a person with a duodenal ulcer may experience weight gain due to eating more to ease discomfort.
The bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is believed to be the main cause of the ulcers. H. pylori may be transmitted from one person to another and through contaminated food and water. Also, there are several different types of stomach ulcer, not just the two (peptic, duodenal) commonly known. Different types of ulcer
Stomach ulcers should be taken very serious, as they can be a precursor to stomach cancer due to having excessive and chronic inflammation. Nearly all cancers start out as inflammation.
Often due to the latest trends in lifestyle, for example, fast foods. With most people living very busy lifestyles, the thought of having to go home and prepare a meal from scratch, often feels daunting. Why bother when we can just grab a tv dinner or get some takeout. The problem is these foods tend to feed and increase the bad bacteria in the gut and are often the cause of excessive acid.
Other causes of ulcers are the use of anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin and pain meds that contain aspirin. Where I don’t think cigarette smoking actually causes ulcers, it certainly can aggravate the condition.
The normal treatment for stomach ulcers are antibiotics along with an acid suppressant. These treatments tend to work in the short term. But very often the same complaint comes back to terrorise again.
Here is a list of recommended remedies that I have found while researching the problem:
I would recommend using at least 3 of the above cures as a fail safe way to knock the problem on the head. Also, controlling your diet is crucial to successful treatment. This is to make sure that your stomach produces less acid when digesting your food. Eating large meals requires the stomach to produce large amounts of stomach acid. So it is best to eat small meals. Ideally, you should be having 5 to 6 small meals a day and not 2 or 3 large ones.
Your meals should be low in fat and sugar and high in fibre. A diet based on fruits, vegetables and whole grains is just that. Therefore, the reason for avoiding fatty foods, is that they are harder for you to digest, so your body then produces more stomach acid and aggravates your condition. Fatty foods include meat, dairy and fried foods. Foods that are low in fat can speed up your recovery. The aim is to make your body more alkaline so eat more vegetables and fruit, such as carrots, kale, broccoli, red/green peppers, cabbage juice, grapes, apricots and kiwi fruit, for their beta-carotene and vitamin C content, in order to help protect the lining of the stomach and intestine.
